The Government of Union Territory of Pondicherry is expected to issue a Government Order (GO) this month to formally establish the Karasur Pharma Park Project.
According to Dr E Anandakrishnan, the Union Territory's drug controller, the order will include details about the project and Pondicherry’s pharmaceutical policy. Once the order is issued, investors are expected to begin work on the formulation park. Infrastructure development is already underway.
Dr. Anandakrishnan informed Pharmabiz that 200 acres of land have been identified and allotted for the proposed pharma park at the Karasur Industrial Estate. The land has been given to the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) for the development of essential infrastructure.
PIPDIC, which is also developing the Sederapet Industrial Estate, is now working on the Karasur site. A formal announcement from the government regarding the park's establishment is expected this month.
Dr. Anandakrishnan has confirmed that the upcoming pharma park will not be limited to formulation units. It is also designed to accommodate the manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and medical devices. He further noted a strong interest from investors in northern India, stating that 30 companies from these states have already submitted their expressions of interest to the government. He said the Pondicherry Drug Manufacturers Association (PDMA) has assured the government of a total Rs.500 crore investment in the project from companies across various states.
S A Ramesh, president of the Pondicherry Drug Manufacturers Association (PDMA), told Pharmabiz that the association has received confirmation from 60 companies across India expressing interest in the project. The PDMA has engaged in discussions with various companies, including formulation, API, and medical device manufacturers, with 60 of them having already submitted their expressions of interest to the government.
According to Ramesh, the interested companies include API units from Telangana and formulation companies from states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Bihar, all willing to establish their units in the upcoming Karasur Pharma Park.
Ramesh said PDMA has urged the government to accelerate infrastructure development for the pharma park. He anticipates the work will be finished within six months of the government issuing the official order. To move the project forward, various approvals are necessary from key departments, including the Pondicherry Planning Authority, Pollution Control Board, Electricity Board, Water Supply Department, and Fire Service, in addition to the Health, Industry, and Labour Departments, and local bodies.
