Recent safety data compiled by the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) has brought to light nine specific pharmaceutical agents linked to notable adverse drug reactions (ADRs).

This comprehensive safety information regarding the nine medicines was released in the recent Drug Information Bulletin published by the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) Bengal Branch, edited by Dr. Subhash C. Mandal. The surveillance reports aim to apprise healthcare practitioners of emerging safety signals and unexpected clinical complications associated with widely prescribed medications.

Among the highlighted antineoplastic and antiviral agents, dacarbazine, used in the chemotherapy of malignant melanoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and soft tissue sarcomas, was associated with transient reversible blurred vision. Additionally, dolutegravir, administered in combination with other antiretroviral agents for HIV-1 infection, was linked to instances of sexual dysfunction.

Antibiotic surveillance identified polymixin B on two separate occasions. In the first instance, its use in urinary tract and bloodstream infections caused by susceptible pathogens resulted in hypokalaemia, while a subsequent review associated the drug with episodes of hypotension when deployed for severe infections of the urinary tract, meninges, and bloodstream.

Gastrointestinal and psychiatric pharmacotherapy monitoring flagged two additional compounds. Clomipramine, prescribed as an antidepressant for obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobic states, and depression, was linked to akathisia. Meanwhile, famotidine, indicated for duodenal and peptic ulcers as well as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, was found to trigger fixed drug eruptions.

Cardiovascular and metabolic therapies also feature prominently in the regulatory safety log. Clonidine, utilized in the management of hypertension, was associated with hyponatremia. Similarly, metoprolol, an antihypertensive agent also prescribed for angina pectoris, functional heart disorders, migraine prophylaxis, and cardiac arrhythmias, was linked to hyperkalaemia.

Rounding out the surveillance registry, teneligliptin, indicated for type 2 diabetes mellitus as a monotherapy adjunct to diet and exercise, was tied to the development of bullous pemphigoid. These findings underscore the critical importance of post-market surveillance and ongoing clinical vigilance in tracking adverse outcomes across diverse therapeutic categories.
