The trends and partnerships we see today will define the next decade of the pharmaceutical industry. Innovation will no longer be confined to pharma alone, it will increasingly be driven by collaborations across technology, healthcare delivery, and policy frameworks, said Amitabh Dube, country president and managing director of Novartis in India.

He made this point while addressing the students of the Shobhaben Pratapbhai Patel School of Pharmacy and Technology Management (SPPSPTM) at NMIMS in Mumbai.

He stressed on the need to balance affordability with innovation. According to him, India faces unique challenges with access to early diagnosis and equitable healthcare delivery. Innovation must directly address unmet medical needs without leaving vast populations behind, he said.

Dube further reflected on the growing importance of public health campaigns. Drawing parallels with past AIDS and HIV awareness initiatives, he noted, ‘Campaigns need more than strong messages, they need delivery mechanisms tailored to regional languages, rural contexts, and diverse audiences. With nearly 60 per cent of our population residing in rural India, inclusivity in communication is non-negotiable’.

Discussing global trade and its influence on pharma, he said while tariffs have minimal immediate impact, global pricing pressures and evolving regulations demand agility. Companies must balance sustainability with affordability while maintaining patient access.

Further, Dube emphasised the importance of preparing students with the right mix of scientific knowledge, management acumen, and adaptability. He said mindset and adaptability will be the biggest differentiators. The workforce of tomorrow must be agile enough to learn, unlearn, and relearn continuously.

Degrees were conferred upon the graduating students of SPPSPTM, and awards were presented to high performers, all-round achievers, faculty, and staff, recognising excellence across academics and leadership. Amitabh Dube appreciated the School’s focus on integrating pharmacy education with technology and management, noting that this equips graduates to contribute meaningfully to research, healthcare delivery, and leadership roles in the global pharma ecosystem.

Founded in 2006, the Shobhaben Pratapbhai Patel School of Pharmacy & Technology Management at NMIMS was established with a vision to contribute to India’s healthcare system. The school offers programmes designed to meet the evolving needs of the pharmaceutical industry, regularly updated in consultation with its board of studies, which includes industry leaders, researchers, FDA professionals, and eminent academicians from across India.

The institution has made significant contributions to pharmaceutical education and research, supported by highly qualified and motivated faculty, world-class infrastructure, and active student participation in academic and co-curricular initiatives.

The School has been ranked among India’s top 10 pharmacy institutions by the NIRF 2024, Ministry of Education, Government of India. Notably, eight SPPSPTM faculty members have been recognised among the ‘Top 2 % Scientists in the World’ by Stanford University and Elsevier-Scopus USA 2024, reflecting the School’s commitment to research excellence and global impact, sources from the institute informed.
