India plans business delegation to Japan to strengthen pharma bilateral trade and investment ties

The Department of Commerce (DoC) has invited expressions of interest from Indian pharmaceutical exporters to participate in a high-level business delegation accompanying the Union commerce and industry minister during the proposed visit to Japan from August 24 to 27, 2026.
The visit is aimed at strengthening India-Japan economic engagement through business and investment-focused discussions, while providing Indian companies with an opportunity to interact directly with Japanese industry representatives and explore new avenues for trade, partnerships and investments.
The DoC has informed Indian pharmaceutical exporters that the Union commerce and industry minister, Government of India (GoI) is likely to undertake an official visit to Japan between August 24 and 27, 2026, accompanied by a high-level government and business delegation. The proposed visit forms part of India's ongoing efforts to deepen commercial and investment ties with Japan, one of its key strategic and economic partners.
As part of the programme, the DoC is planning a Trade Promotion Roadshow along with sector-specific business-to-business (B2B) meetings involving Japanese industry associations and business representatives. These engagements are expected to provide Indian companies with a platform to showcase their capabilities, understand emerging opportunities in the Japanese market, and establish direct contacts with potential business partners and investors.
The initiative is designed to promote bilateral trade and investment by facilitating structured interactions between Indian and Japanese businesses across identified sectors, including pharmaceuticals. The programme is also expected to support discussions on expanding market access, encouraging technology collaborations, attracting investments and strengthening commercial partnerships between enterprises from both countries.
Officials from the DoC have urged interested pharmaceutical exporters to submit their expressions of interest at the earliest.
"Union commerce minister, India is likely to visit Japan from 24 to 27 August 2026 for business and investment-related bilateral meetings, accompanied by a high-level government and business delegation," the DoC said in its communication to exporters.
The proposed business delegation is expected to serve as an important platform for Indian exporters seeking to strengthen their presence in the Japanese market. Japan continues to be a significant destination for high-quality pharmaceutical products, healthcare technologies and collaborative research opportunities, making direct interactions with industry stakeholders valuable for Indian companies looking to expand their international footprint.
However, the DoC has informed prospective participants that financial assistance under the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) or Market Access Initiative (MAI) schemes will not be available for this particular event. Companies interested in joining the delegation will therefore have to make independent arrangements for their participation.
With preparations underway for the ministerial visit, the DoC has encouraged eligible exporters to respond promptly so that the consolidated list of participants can be submitted within the stipulated timeframe, enabling further coordination for the trade promotion programme in Japan.
