The Ayush industry is bullish about the revision of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) norms which will strengthen quality standards, improve the global credibility of traditional medicine products and open up new growth opportunities.

The announcement which came in the end of July brought in a whiff of enthusiasm.  Particularly the industry in Karnataka believes that greater alignment with international quality benchmarks could help Indian Ayush manufacturers expand exports and tap into the growing global demand for Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine.

According to Dr DBA Narayana, CSO, Ayurvidye Trust and an eminent pharmacist, Ayush ministry’s amendment of the Drugs and Cosmetic Rules, especially revising the GMP standards and issues which come with its very important. Given the current acceptance of Ayush products by physicians and many of them use them as add-on.

The growing acceptance of these products globally is creating a favourable environment for Indian manufacturers to expand their presence in international markets. With rising demand for traditional and holistic healthcare solutions, the industry sees the revised GMP framework as growth avenue to strengthen product quality, enhance consumer confidence and improve the global competitiveness, he added.

Therefore, we see any step taken by the ministry in such an amendment to improve and ensure quality products is a welcome step. However, many of the clauses that have been added in the amendment does need a lot of hard work, some amount of investment and time to implement them, especially as this sector has a fair amount of people who are in the small scale sector and some who are in the medium sector, said Dr Narayana.

I think the government should do a good hand holding for this sector, support them, guide them and also provide them some amount of time to implement them. Maybe one to two years should be given before actually implementing and taking action of any kind, said Dr Narayana.

Upgrading manufacturing standards and the need for required documentation, with the revised standards need to be implemented within three years from now. The extension on the validity of licences and loan licences issued to manufacture Ayurveda, Siddha, or Unani drugs continually, benefits the small companies, said a section of the industry.

Dr Chita Phadnis, an independent consultant, said that the Ministry of Ayush (Eleventh Amendment) Rules, 2026 are a significant step forward for Ayush manufacturers. The introduction of perpetual licensing eliminates the need for periodic licence renewals, reducing administrative documentation, regulatory burden, and the uncertainty associated with renewal processes. This allows manufacturers to focus more on quality, innovation, and business growth.

The uniform product code for traceability and the revised quality control personnel requirements and the stability protocols will support the production of Ayush products in a more robust, quality-driven, and compliant manufacturing environment, Dr Chita told Pharmabiz.

Overall, the revised GMP norms are being viewed as a positive step for the Ayush industry, balancing stricter quality and documentation requirements with measures aimed at easing regulatory compliance. The longer implementation period and extended licence validity are expected to give manufacturers, particularly smaller companies, adequate time to upgrade their facilities and systems. As the industry adapts to the new framework, the reforms could strengthen product quality, improve global credibility and support greater exports, positioning the Ayush sector for sustained growth.
