The Ayurveda Medicine Manufacturers Organisation of India (AMMOI) has prepared a strategy based programme to highlight the ‘Ayurveda Aahar’ (Ayush based diet and lifestyle) being promoted by the Union Ministry of Ayush in order to prevent certain chronic lifestyle diseases like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and other diseases like sterility, pallor, cancer and heart diseases.
In the light of the Ayush ministry’s diet concept, AMMOI observes that the Ayurveda diet will protect the people from chronic and lifestyle diseases, and promote better health and self-confidence.
‘Ayurveda Aahar’ was the theme for celebration of the national Ayurveda day on November 2, last year across the country and inspired by it, AMMOI has decided to promote the theme and the concept all over Kerala, sources informed.
Dr D Ramanathan, general secretary of the medicine manufacturers association has exhorted the members and other stakeholders of the system to recommend ‘Aayurveda Aahar’ as per the recipes or ingredients according to methods described in the ancient books of Ayurveda to be supplied to the people suffering from lifestyle diseases and chronic ailments.  In a letter forwarded to all the members of AMMOI and to the practitioners of Ayurveda community, he said this Ayush diet will help prevent the increasing lifestyle diseases and create a controlled eating pattern for the people.
Talking about the Ayush diet project, Dr. Ramanathan who prepared Aayush Aahar on the national Ayurveda day and distributed to the patients at his hospital, Sitaram Ayurveda Pharmacy in Thrissur, said the Union ministry of Ayush has issued Ayush nutritional dietary guidelines, based on which Ayurveda Aahar project is implemented. According to him, to promote the concept, it is necessary that all state governments should give awareness about Ayurveda Aahar, yoga and exercise to the common people and also make them part of the curriculum in the schools. He opined that diet has to be chosen according to the ‘prakriti’ or constitution of every individual.
The veteran physician said a lot of foreign nationals are coming to India for Ayurveda treatments every year for various ailments because of the increasing popularity of the Kerala Ayurveda health system. The state Ayush department under the government is also supportive to the growth of the sector.
On December 27, 2021 the government think tank Niti Ayog released the fourth edition of its health index which ranked states based on overall health performance. Kerala was ranked as the best performer on top. As per the health index of the Niti Ayog, Kerala has the lowest Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). AMMOI cites the influence of Ayurveda treatment as one of the reasons for the achievement.
Hailing the union Ayush ministry, the secretary of the AMMOI said Kerala is the state where the department of Ayush spends more allocation of funds on health grounds. He said the Ayurveda healthcare sector in Kerala is becoming stronger with the setting up of Ayurveda dispensaries and hospitals in every punchayath under the National Health Mission (NHM) scheme.
