Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to dominate discussions at the Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC) 2025 scheduled for December 19 to 21 at Bengaluru with industry leaders focusing on its transformative potential to accelerate drug discovery, streamline research and development processes, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

As the sector faces mounting pressure to reduce time-to-market and improve patient outcomes, pharma companies are increasingly investing in AI-driven technologies to stay competitive and future-ready.

According to Harish K Jain, chairman, local organising committee, 74th IPC, pharmaceutical development is traditionally a long, costly, and high-risk process. On an average, it takes 10–15 years and over $2 billion to bring a new drug to market, with a very low success rate (less than 10% of compounds entering clinical trials are eventually approved). The integration of AI including machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), deep learning, and generative models has the potential to transform the industry by reducing timelines, optimizing resources, and improving patient outcomes.

AI is revolutionizing pharmaceutical development by making the process faster, cheaper, and more precise. From target discovery to post-market surveillance, AI enhances decision-making, reduces attrition rates, and enables personalized healthcare, Jain told Pharmabiz.

The successful adoption of AI will depend on robust data ecosystems, regulatory clarity, and industry-academia collaboration. In the coming decade, AI is poised to become a cornerstone of global pharmaceutical innovation, he noted.

Mehul Shah, founder and managing director, Encube Ethicals and former secretary, IDMA in a recording said focus of AI at this IPC is both timely and visionary. In the last few years, we have seen the progress from analyticals to generative AI. Pharma now has the chance to harness these tools to reimagine our value chain and drive efficiency and effectiveness. Our industry operates in a world of rising regulatory expectations. To drive we need bullet proof operations which are efficient, transparent and fully traceable.

AI and technology will be backbone of this transformation. At the same time, we must embed the right culture and behaviours in our people to ensure full multiplied impact of this technology. We hope this 74th edition will be a launch pad for the next era for pharma where tech, AI and human values converge to build a healthier tomorrow.

Dr. Md Salahuddin, Principal, Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy, & Member, IQAC Cell, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and co-ordinator, 74th IPC, Bengaluru said that the integration of AI is revolutionizing various professions, including pharmacy. Academia and industry are embracing this change, with the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) already incorporating IT-related subjects like Python, AI and machine learning into pharmacy curricula.

In the next 3-5 years, we can expect a significant transformation in pharmacy education and practice, marking the dawn of a new era in techno-pharmacy. This shift will likely bring about innovative approaches to patient care, drug development and pharmaceutical research, added Dr Salahuddin.

The application of AI will significantly benefit research and development, said Jatish N Sheth, president, KDPMA, head of the Exhibition Committee for the 74th IPC, and director, Srushti Pharma.

"AI has the potential to accelerate the pace of innovation and improve the efficiency of product development. It can help identify the safety and efficacy profile of a drug at an earlier stage, enabling more informed decision-making and reducing time to market. Therefore, the integration of AI into R&D processes is not just valuable, but essential,” added Sheth.
