Indian lifesciences industry sees that artificial intelligence (AI) is propelling the transformative shift with scalable, data-driven solutions that are already demonstrating real-world impact.
On the occasion of Appreciation Day for AI observed on July 16, annually, pharma and healthcare sectors acknowledge its potential to drive innovation and shape the future.
Harshal Kamalakar Sawant, practice head, Healthcare Software Services, Tata Elxsi, said, AI is no longer just a futuristic idea but is a catalyst redefining India's healthcare landscape today. From drug discovery and smart manufacturing in pharma to early diagnosis through AI-powered imaging, AI is driving a transformative shift across the ecosystem. Startups and enterprises alike are leveraging AI to move from reactive to proactive care models enabling faster detection of conditions like sepsis or cancer and optimizing post-operative recovery through continuous monitoring.
Beyond clinical interventions, AI is enhancing operational efficiency—automating shift allocations, device calibration, and even enabling physicians to dictate notes that are seamlessly integrated into electronic health records. However, its success in India depends on two vital enablers: data digitization and population-specific model training. AI solutions trained on Western data may not generalize to India’s diverse population. We must therefore invest in localized datasets, robust clinical validations, and transparent governance frameworks that uphold ethical data use, Sawant told Pharmabiz.
India is at an inflection point. With accelerating digitization in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and supportive government initiatives, the next five years will see an explosion in health data, fuelling more precise, inclusive AI applications. On AI Appreciation Day, we recognize AI’s immense potential—not just in transforming care delivery but in making healthcare more accessible, efficient, and personalized for every Indian citizen, he added.
According to Enbasekar D, co-founder & CTO, MediBuddy, AI is no longer a buzzword in India’s healthcare industry but is already playing a pivotal role on the ground. Instead of focusing solely on futuristic tech, organisations are leveraging AI to tackle the everyday pain points faced by doctors and patients.
Today, AI systems are capable of sifting through enormous volumes of medical records, helping clinicians identify patterns and assisting clinicians in making more accurate and quicker diagnoses. For instance, in the process of triaging, AI-powered tools are capable of prioritising patient cases based on urgency, so critical cases get attention without unnecessary wait times a win for both operational flow and patient outcomes, he added.
On the personalisation front, AI is playing a key role in recommending tailored follow-ups and lifestyle changes based on each patient’s health profile, upgrading the quality of healthcare delivered significantly. Yet, for AI to truly strengthen healthcare delivery, we need better data systems, strong privacy safeguards, and mutually beneficial collaboration between technology experts and medical professionals. The focus must always remain on enhancing patient care and making quality healthcare accessible, rather than on technology alone, stated Enbasekar.
