The lone pharmaceutical marketers’ body in the country, the Consortium of Indian Pharmaceutical Marketers and Manufacturers Association (CIPMMA), is now seemed to be heading for a vertical split with the decision of its founder general secretary and apex committee member, A Kannan, to part ways with the organization.
Kannan, a leading pharmaceutical marketer in Chennai, and a key component of all association activities connected with the pharma-business sector in Tamil Nadu, informed Pharmabiz that he has tendered his resignation to the president of the association.
The reason cited for his resignation is that the new office-bearers of the association are deviating from the core objective of the consortium and inclined towards vested interests of certain business people. For mobilizing support for them, they have made several PCDs (propaganda-cum-distributors) of various companies as members of the association leaving behind all ethical values of the business organization which was constituted to do business by fully complying with all drug laws and other rules and regulations of the country.
Kannan said as per the constitution of the association the members of CIPMMA should be registered marketers and they should have obtained drug licences from the respective drugs control department. The association has branches in other states, however its large presence is in Tamil Nadu only. Kannan had held the general secretary post two times, president post one time and the chairman post one time. Presently, he is one of the apex committee members.
Sources close to the marketing leader said a splinter group has now emerged within CIPMMA under the leadership of Kannan who is thinking of forming a separate body of registered pharma marketers pan India. About one hundred markers belong to various districts in the state assembled in a hotel in the city two days ago and decided to tender resignations along with Kannan. It is learnt that Kannan and his team have drafted a constitution for the new business association with headquarters in Chennai. CIPMMA’s headquarter is in Trichy in southern Tamil Nadu.
Another marketer, who is supporting the splinter group said most of the registered marketers from the 38 districts in the state have shown allegiance to Kannan’s new outfit of pharma marketers. He alleged that there was no legal validity for the membership of the PCD people in CIPMMA because as per the by-law of the consortium only registered marketers are permitted to become a member of the association. He further said the present body of office-bearers of the consortium is trying to create an artificial majority in the annual general body meetings.
Meanwhile Karunai Kadal, the president of CIPMMA, a marketer from Thanjavur, did not want to respond to the issue.
