The Telangana state government has identified as many as 1,545 pharma
and other chemical manufacturing units in and around of Hyderabad city
and is drafting a comprehensive plan to relocate all these red and
orange category industries beyond the outer ring road (ORR) on the
outskirts of greater Hyderabad municipal corporation limits (GHMC).
While
revealing about the state government’s plan to protect environment in
Hyderabad from the polluting industries, K. Taraka Rama Rao, Minister
for Industries and Municipal Administration said, “The Telangana
pollution control board has already categorized as many as 1545
industries into Red and Orange categories. Majority of these industries
include pharma, bulk drug and other hazardous chemical manufacturing and
oil lubricating companies which are the major contributors of air,
water and land pollutants in the city. Of them 385 are already shifted
and located outside ORR. Very soon we will also relocate the remaining
1160 polluting companies to pre-located regions beyond ORR.”
According
to Telangana State Pollution Control Board authorities, of the
remaining 1160 polluting companies 803 are categorized into red and the
remaining 357 companies are categorized into orange categories. “All the
major industries are categorized in to red, orange and green categories
based on the severity of pollution generated by them.
In this
classification, "Red represents highly polluting industries, 'Orange'
represents moderately polluting industries and 'Green' represents
marginally polluting units. This classification helps the common people
to understand about pollution as well as prioritization of plans and
programmes of pollution control boards and help in easy surveillance
according pollution potential of a particular category of industry,”
explained Ravinder, a senior environmental scientist at TSPCB.
To
relocate all the highly polluting bulk drug, pharma and other hazardous
chemical and oil lubrication companies, the state government had
already released a GO long back in the year 2013; however, the
government took time to conduct feasibility study for relocating the
polluting industries outside ORR as per the guidelines of TSPCB. For
this, the government had entrusted the responsibility to Environmental
Protection Training Research Institute (EPTRI). As part of its study the
EPTRI has identified and suggested the government about 19 land parcels
outside the ORR for relocating red and orange category industries.
