Olive Lifesciences has sought the assistance of the United States-based Brunswick Laboratories to analyse the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of its functional fruit beverage i-Pulse, which was launched early this year.

The recommended daily intake of i-Pulse is two ounces or 60ml, which has an approximate ORAC value of 7,000 units. Health experts have recommended the  consumption of 5,000 ORAC units per day for optimal antioxidant protection.

“The United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) mandates 3,000-5,000 ORAC units to maintain one’s well-being. Therefore, we opted to go for the ORAC analysis and sponsored this test which was evaluated by Brunswick Laboratories, a third-party testing facility, to support the health value of the functional fruit beverage,” said Dr H N Shivaprasad, vice-president, Olive Lifesciences.

“The ORAC result is expressed as micromole Trolox equivalency (µmole TE) per ml. Now, the total antioxidant power of i-Pulse against the five predominant reactive species was found to be 117.96 µmole TE/ml,” he added.

“The company approached Brunswick Laboratories to provide its consumers adequate data about the ORAC values. With its unique and synergistic combination of antioxidant fruits, i-Pulse is an excellent defence against free radical damage, supporting the management of healthy cholesterol and improving immunity,” Dr Shivaprasad added.

“The ORAC test is among the most-acknowledged methods that measure antioxidant scavenging activity against oxygen radicals that are known to be involved in the pathogenesis of aging and many common diseases. i-Pulse was evaluated for ORAC 5.0,” he said.

ORAC 5.0 consists of five types of ORAC assays that evaluate the antioxidant capacity of a material against the five primary reactive oxygen species (ROS), commonly known as oxygen radicals, that are found in humans. They are peroxyl radical, hydroxyl radical, superoxideanion, singlet oxygen and peroxynitrite,” Dr Shivaprasad explained.

i-Pulse, an oral antioxidant, is developed by Olive Lifesciences and marketed by Indus Viva Health Sciences. It helps to fight free radical damage and can help to maintain healthy skin, with different fruit having high antioxidant potential. Acai berry is the largest component.

The functional fruit beverage is also known to support restorative powers that would supercharge health and assist in delaying premature aging.
