In order to promote indigenous innovation in critical health technologies, Kalam Institute of Health Technology (KIHT), Visakhapatnam has partnered with key stakeholders of the medical implants industry during a recent meet at India's first medical device park - Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam.
The partnership witnessed representation from experts of bio-material segment of medical technology. Focus of the partnership is biological implantable materials, their sourcing, manufacturing and clinical applicability in the Indian healthcare context.
Biomedical implants are products which are induced into human body for addressing malfunctions. These are critical technologies which have direct interface with the living system and hence mandates intense knowledge on design, applicability, compatibility with living systems, non-contamination attribute, anti-microbial sterilization needs among others.
Stakeholders representing biomaterial implants from various reputed institutions like IITs, NITs, IISc, VIT, MSME manufacturers, large scale manufacturers like Tata Steel and policy facilitation organisations like KIHT and AMTZ deliberated on biomaterial implants innovations across the country which included detailed perspectives on biological materials.
It was also advocated that there is a need to promote more indigenous innovation in the country which could lead to reduction in India’s import dependency.
KIHT and AMTZ took up the mandate to facilitate the requisite academic research projects needed to support manufacturing in time-bound manner and bring together stakeholders to create the first ever platform for end-to-end bio-materials product realization.
Dr Jitendar Sharma, managing director, AMTZ called for more closer co-operation among academic and industry in bio-materials sector to address India’s concerns on import dependency in implantable materials.
KIHT has also tied up with BioCubaFarma and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) with focus on exchange of technologies, products, innovations, transfer of technologies and commercialization of innovative healthcare products.
BioCubaFarma is the Cuban organization of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries which manages the country’s efforts towards manufacturing medicines, diagnostics and medical equipment. It also serves as a gateway for potential partners and investors interested in accessing the extensive biopharma resources Cuba has to offer.
KIHT is the premier institute of the country for promoting back end support to the growing medical technology and plays an active role in supporting activities related to research on critical components of health technologies, commercial exploitation of newer technologies, apart from being a front runner in providing regulatory and non-regulatory support for stakeholders in health technologies.
