The Karnataka drug control department has tested medicine samples picked up at random from pharmacy outlets and found that 15 of these to be not-of-standard quality (NSQ) which are in circulation. The department has cautioned the public to verify before purchase of similar brands.

The inspectors of the department conducted a massive surprise inspection drive in June. The drug samples were sent for analysis to the drug testing labs by the drug enforcement team.

The department already has a robust infrastructure in place with three drug testing labs: one each at Bengaluru, Hubballi and Ballari. Bengaluru drug testing lab is NABL certified and the other two facilities are working towards achieving the same accreditation to maintain high quality standards in validation and generation of test reports. We have the required technical capabilities and hence our enforcement team ensures continuous vigilance on the quality of drugs circulated in the market, said Karnataka drugs controller Bhagoji T Khanapure.

The department has now communicated to the companies on the not-of-standard quality medicines. It has also communicated to the pharmacy outlets across the state and the hospitals to ensure these medicines are not stocked and prescribed. Public has also been forewarned not to purchase these drugs over-the-counter.

The drugs are Paracure-650 mg manufactured by Knox Life Sciences Baddi, omeperazole and domperidone capsules by Astam Healthcare at Solan, pantozit or pantoprazole tablets by Shiv Industries at Solan. Telmisartan and hydrochloride tablets manufactured by Magnus Biotech, Bada Gaon, Kamal district Haryana, Medi-Aps tablets which are aceclofenac, paracetamol, serratiopeptidase manufactured by Medichamber at Karnal. Cetirizine by Daffohils Laboratories at Dehradun in Uttarakhand. Mitalon with chlorhexidine gluconate and cetrimide solution by Multicure Pharma at Bhongir, Hyderabad, Telangana. Foly-SG softgel capsules by Amster Labs Baddi, Kelora Medicare soap by Gladios at Gandhinagar, aluminium magnesium and simethone oral suspension by Sunlife Sciences at Haridwar, Toppen DSR which is pantoprazole sodium and domperidone capsules by Biomax Biotechnics at Haryana, Pehr-D which is pantoprazole sodium and domperidone tablets by Proceed Formulation at Dera Bassi in Chandigarh, Panpace -40 pantoprazole tablets.

Pharma companies note that although rigorous quality control testing throughout the production process is carried out to ensure that medicines manufactured adhere to meet established quality standards, yet non-standard quality is a critical concern. To combat this issue, several measures are in place to identify and prevent the distribution of such drugs. These include the recent government mandate to label packs with QR codes to trace the medicines in the supply chain.
