The pharma entrepreneurs and traders in Jharkhand have welcomed the state government’s recent decision to start one pharma park near Ranchi to support the medical requirements of the eastern part of the country.

On August 24, the state cabinet gave approval for a pharma park, a proposal jointly submitted by the industry and traders supported by the state drugs control administration.

Currently, Jharkhand is depending on Sikkim and West Bengal for major part of its medicinal requirements. The state has about 80 pharma manufacturing units, but all of them are operating in small scale sector with not much high profile products. But the government wants to establish a pharma park and attract big players from Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad to invest in Jharkhand, says Suman Tiwari, deputy drugs controller in Ranchi.

Sharing information with Pharmabiz, the DDC said basically Jharkhand is an industrial hub of metals and minerals, but the present government gives thrust to pharma industry to grow in the state with the vision that it will help the entire eastern states. He said the drugs control administration in Jharkhand will provide all support to the government initiative as it is badly needed in a state like Jharkhand where 35% of the people are tribals. Today, for all medicinal needs, Jharkhand depends on Sikkim and Kolkata.

According to Suman Tiwari, government plans to set up the cluster at Bijupara in Barhi near Ranchi, the state capital.

Responding to the decision of the government, Luv Kumar, an industry leader in Jharkhand and currently engaged in pharma trade, said the initiative of the government will definitely encourage people to start new pharma units in the state which lacks major companies now. Kumar said he shut down his manufacturing unit in Ranchi due to lack of conducive industrial environment. The state has scope in pharma sector because, he said, as long as human beings are there, medicines will be required. The local production of pharmaceuticals will hopefully help the state to become a pharma hub in the eastern part of India.

Sujit Paul, an industry person from Ranchi is of the opinion that there is big scope for pharmaceuticals and food supplements in Jharkhand and the government decision to support the manufacturing sector will indirectly benefit the neighbouring states also. He said the proposed park facility can generate more employment opportunities for the youngsters in the east.

Manish Sharraff, a long experienced whole sale dealer in Jharkhand has hailed the decision of the government. He said it is a positive decision to help all the eastern states. "The policy of the government is very attractive and we the traders welcome it. We have been depending on Sikkim, Kolkata and Patna for procurement of medicines. There is all possibility for flourishing industrial units in Ranchi which has easy linkage with Sikkim, West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar," said Manish.

Talking about the government initiative, deputy drugs controller Suman Tiwari said, "Under the dynamic leadership of Arun Kumar Singh, additional chief secretary, department of health & family welfare, we are taking proactive approach in all spheres and acting as facilitating regulators under the department of drugs control administration"
