With a holistic approach to expand Ayurveda system in entire south India and to promote wellness tourism by combining ayurvedic treatments, the Chennai based Indian Medical Practitioners’ Co-operative Pharmacy and Stores Ltd (Impcops) is planning to open more hospitals, clinics, medicine depots and manufacturing units in almost all the districts in the south.

Along with the establishment of more healthcare units, the society will try to scale up the production of all classical medicines, increase sale and promote use of the drugs amongst the people at all levels.

Mainly focusing on Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states for implementing the project first, Impcops has devised a plan to attach Ayurveda hospitals with all the existing depots and establish new hospitals with panchakarma therapy facilities. Expert masseurs and panchakarma therapy practitioners from Kerala and Tamil Nadu will be recruited to manage the centres for quality services, says Dr. Rangaswami Kannan, president of the Impcops.

In a special interview with Pharmabiz after he became the president of the society for the second time, Dr. Kannan said currently Impcops has a total of 27 depots which are in multiple locations covering five states. In Telangana two depots are operating there, one each at Hyderabad and Warangal, and three depots in Andhra Pradesh, located at Vijayawada, Vishakhapatanam and Tirupathy. In Karnataka, there is only one depot, but in Kerala two depots are put up there. In another six months period, the number of depots in the Telugu states will be increased to 25 and they will be attached with Ayurveda hospitals. Since domestic and international tourists are visiting Hyderabad in large numbers and both the state governments are giving emphasis on wellness tourism, Ayurveda has a big scope in these states.

He said a few months ago, a manufacturing unit was opened in Tadeppalli in Vijayawada by Impcops which now receives immense support from the government. The demand of Ayurveda medicines is increasing in the state day by day and the sales revenue received by the company in July crossed Rs. 5 crore. It is a very big achievement for the society as far as its business is concerned.

The Vijayawada depot has applied for licences for 180 Ayurveda drugs and the ISM commissionerate has issued 70. The unit is now manufacturing all the 70 kinds of medicines. Proper supply is maintained as per the demand orders from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

In Tamil Nadu, Impcops has 19 depots and two IP hospitals for siddha, two hospitals for ayurvedic panchakarma and three hospital-cum-depot-cum-panchakarma centres. The hospital with IP wards at Thoraipakkam in Chennai has 50 beds and the HQ hospital at Thiruvanmiyur has 10 beds. New hospitals with panchakarma facilities will be established in Madurai, Coimbatore, Thirunelveli and Trichy.

Dr. Kannan said he will discuss with the Ayurveda Medicine Manufacturers Organisation of India (AMMOI) in Kerala seeking their support to the society. Further, it will engage in discussion with the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) in Hyderabad to explore opportunities for exports of Ayurveda medicines from Tamil Nadu to foreign countries.

When asked why Impcops is not promoting siddha in other states, the president of the society said, “We are doing that also. Since Ayurveda is more popular among people in north India and outside, we are going along with it. Gradually siddha will get equal status with Ayurveda also,” he said.
