Condemning the derogatory remarks made by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against the Ayurveda treatment protocols released by the Union government, the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) for drug development under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) has said that the modern medical practitioners of the IMA are still living under the colonial rule of the British Raj.

In a letter written to the Union health minister hailing his supportive measures for Ayurveda, Dr Anand Kumar Chaudhary, chairman of the SAG under the CCRAS, stated that the allopathic medical association lacks wisdom in grasping the traditional Indian knowledge and the research studies conducted on Ayurveda by eminent scientists. He said IMA should read the scientific studies before making any comments and they must try to change their mindset towards Ayurveda.

The Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, in the presence of the Ayush minister Dr Sripad Yesso Naik, released the National Clinical Management Protocol based on Ayurveda and Yoga for management of COVID-19 in last week. Following this, the IMA has released posers to the Union health minister through a press release.  They wanted Dr Harsh Vardhan to answer the queries put by them, otherwise they will be compelled to feel that the minister himself is inflicting a fraud on the nation and on the gullible patients by calling placebos as drugs, IMA wrote in the PR.

Speaking to Pharmabiz, Dr Anand K Chaudhary, who is also the HoD of Rasashastra at the Ayurveda Medical College at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, said the minister had released the protocol for prevention of COVID-19 infection and treatment of asymptomatic as well as mild cases of COVID-19 based on Ayush and Yoga. Subsequently the IMA released five posers to the health minister in a press release in which Ayurveda remedies have been described as mere placebos.

“The IMA is an association of allopathic medical professionals who claim as scientific people, the so called biomedical scientists. I want to tell them that before making any comments they must understand the facts. They must read the scientific studies on Ayurveda uploaded on the portal of the ministry. Let them go to the file published on the public domain where 217 pages documents were uploaded. Those were published by the former director general of the ICMR, Dr V M Katoch, the vice-chairman of the UGC, Dr Bhushan Patwardhan, Dr. Nandini Kumar of ICMR etc. Let the IMA read the scientific studies first, then comment. If they cannot understand the fact, it is not our concern. But we will think that they are avoiding all those things which are being accepted by the whole world,” said Dr Chaudhary.

Referring to the press release, Dr Chaudhary said the PR of the IMA is full of contradictions and with prejudiced approach to insult Indian traditional knowledge which is a treasure trove of the country’s civilization that existed for thousands of years. He alleged that this medical knowledge of the country was kept aside during the colonial period in India. “During British rule, the progress of ayurvedic sciences was blocked by the rulers as they did not want to promote any other knowledge not developed by them. The situation deteriorated the growth of the Indian traditional healing system,” he wrote in the letter to the minister.

Further he said that the services of the allopathic doctors at L1, L 2 and in some L 3 stages of COVID-19 management is admirable, but ayurveda has success stories to register with L 1 and L 2. Chaudhary wanted the IMA community to create a mindset for a ‘unite and fight’ concept to fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
