The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, has unearthed widespread violations during a special enforcement drive conducted across corporate hospital pharmacies in the state. The inspections, carried out on September 21, revealed serious violations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 by these pharmacies.
According to officials, the DCA teams inspected 115 pharmacies situated within or attached to various corporate hospitals. The inspection found that several pharmacies were functioning without a Registered Pharmacist on duty while dispensing prescription medicines, a direct violation of regulatory norms meant to safeguard patient health.
The irregularities detected also included the non-maintenance of sales bills, failure to maintain prescription drug registers and Schedule H1 drug registers, and the inability to produce purchase bills for medicines stocked. Officials noted that in many cases, drugs were sold without the prescription of a Registered Medical Practitioner.
Shockingly, the inspections also revealed that some pharmacies were stocking expired medicines alongside saleable ones. Thermolabile drugs, which require strict temperature-controlled storage, were found to be kept under improper conditions, raising concerns about their safety and efficacy. In addition, several pharmacies were found to be illegally stocking physician’s samples, which are not meant for sale.
Senior DCA officials confirmed that irregularities in maintaining copies of sales and purchase bills were rampant across the inspected outlets. “Such practices compromise the safety of patients and are a violation of the law,” sources from the department said.
Show cause notices have been issued to all 115 pharmacies, and the Administration has assured that strict action will be taken against them under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the rules framed thereunder.
Officers in the DCA stated that its enforcement teams will continue to monitor hospital-attached pharmacies closely and warned that any violations that put patient health at risk will be met with stringent legal action.
