Commerce ministry begins anti-dumping probe into API ceftriaxone sodium sterile exported from China

The Union commerce ministry has initiated anti-dumping investigation concerning imports of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) ceftriaxone sodium sterile exported from China following complaints by domestic firms-- Nectar Life Sciences and Sterile India.
The complaint has been supported by Aurobindo Pharma Ltd.
The complainants stated that material injury is being caused to the domestic industry due to dumped imports from China. They requested for imposition of anti-dumping duty on the imports of ceftriaxone sodium sterile from the subject country.
Ceftriaxone sodium sterile also known as ceftriaxone disodium hemiheptahydrate-sterile is a third generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used for treating lower respiratory tract infection, skin infection, pelvic inflammatory disease, intra-abdominal infection, uncomplicated gonorrhoea infection, and surgical prophylaxis.
The probe will be conducted by the commerce ministry's investigation arm Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) from April 2019-March 2020. The directorate will also look into the data from April 2016- March 2019.
The DGTR in a notification stated that on the basis of the duly substantiated written application by the domestic industry, and having satisfied itself, on the basis of the prima facie evidence submitted by the domestic industry about dumping of the subject goods originating in or exported from the subject country, injury to the domestic industry, the authority, hereby, initiates an investigation to determine the existence, degree and effect of any alleged dumping in respect of the subject goods originating in or exported from the subject country.
If DGTR finds that there is dumping of the product which is impacting domestic manufacturers, it will recommend the amount of anti-dumping duty, which if levied, would be adequate to remove the injury to the domestic industry.
Dumping impacts the price of the product in the importing country, hitting margins and profits of manufacturing firms.
The imposition of anti-dumping duty which is permissible under the World Trade Organization (WTO) regime, aimed at ensuring fair trading practices and creating a level-playing field for domestic producers vis-a-vis foreign producers and exporters.
