The Ayurveda Medicine Manufacturers Organisation of India (AMMOI) has
demanded to the Union Ayush Ministry to declare October 28, the birthday
of Lord Dhanwanthari, as ‘Ayurveda Day’ to be observed by ayurvedic
followers every year. The association's office-bearers met the
Union Ayush Minister in New Delhi and handed over a memorandum to him
requesting to consider this demand as Ayurveda is the foremost
traditional treatment system in India. In the memorandum, it is
mentioned that for each category of treatment system in the Ayush
streams has a particular date to be observed as its day. But, the major
system in the Ayush, Ayurveda, lacks a date to be observed as ‘Ayurveda
Day’. All other systems are observed on separate days every year. Dr.
Ramanathan, the general secretary of AMMOI, after submitting the
memorandum to the Ayush Ministry, said the minister has agreed to
consider their demand positively. He said Siddha system, one of the
systems in the Ayush and hailing from Tamil Nadu has the date, April 14
as its Day for celebration. Similarly, June 21 is observed as the Day
for Yoga every year and February 12 is the Day for Unani for
celebration. Dr. K V Ramesh and Dr. Kottakkal Ramesh from New
Delhi unit also accompanied Dr. Ramanathan to meet the Ayush Minister.
The AMMOI leaders have given the copies of the memorandum to the members
of Parliament from Kerala.
