The second day of CPhI India 2017 was its inaugural day at the Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre in Goregaon. One of the highlights was a presentation by Dr B K Iyer, medical advisor, Astareal. The topic was Choosing the right antioxidant: A deeper perspective.
He said, “Physicians have different points of view on antioxidants, and a possible reason for this is ambiguity. Choosing an effective anti-oxidant is important, and there are ten characteristics that need to be kept in mind while doing so.”
“An effective antioxidant effectively enters the proper slot; is (preferably) soluble in water and in the lipid medium, and maintain structural integrity and functional stability of the cell,” Dr Iyer said.
“It should be easily absorbed and more potent; possess no proactive property; provide additional bonus effects; should be issue-specific, provide bonus effects to exert positive or negative effects on genes, and have the capability to repair and supplement the internal or primary enzymatic,” he added.
Thus, an ideal antioxidant or combination is one that strives to achieve the work.
Sai Shankar, global business development director for connected devices, Aptar Pharma, made a presentation on driving better patient adherence with connectivity.
He said, “There is increased digital health adoption. Aptar Digital Business’ strategy-technology development establshes partnerships. Connected devices help improve patient life and reduce healthcare costs. Digital health is rapidly changing the drug delivery landscape.”
Dr Andres Henriksson, principal application specialist, DuPont Nutrition and Health, Danisco Australia Pty Ltd, spoke about clinical research probiotics for improved digestive and immune health.
He added that there were commercial opportunities for probiotics following the outcomes of clinical trials.
Diabetes is on the rise, with 422 million adults being diabetic. Gut-derived metabolic endotoxemia is the hypothesis. Probiotic strains having anti-inflammatory properties can be an effective cure.
The presentation spoke about the effect of cell free culture supernatants on the transepitheliol, addig that B-420 reduced fat mass, but not lean mass.
It also dwelled upon the prevalance of constipation in different regions and in women and men. The prevalance of constipation increases with age.
