CPhI China 2013, one of the largest  international events for the  pharmaceutical industry, is slated to take place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) between June 25 and 27, 2013. The event will focus on regulation analysis, risk management, on-site inspection, World Health Organisation (WHO) pre-qualification and international procurement. The event will bring 2,400 exhibitors and 30,000 attendees together from across the world together. Nik Rudge, managing director, UBM Live, shared details in an e-mail interview with Harcha Bhaskar. Excerpts:

How different would CPhI China 2013 be compared to the previous edition, and what is the event's theme this year?
This year, CPhI China has increased in scale, with more exhibitors, additional networking opportunities and a greater range of content services.

With a view to enhance the customer experience and return on investment (RoI) value, CPhI China 2013 has added mobile applications, high-value conferences and a live laboratory showcase. We have new individual daily highlights at this year's show.

Furthermore, the 2013 event has a strong focus on research and development (R&D) with LabWorld, BioPh and ICSE all contained in one hall.

Could you throw some light on the seminars and conference taking place at CPhI China 2013 CPhI China and World Medical Forum 2013 ?
CPhI China and World Medical Forum – co-organised by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products (CCCMHPIE) and UBM Conferences – is a paid forum. It will be held alongside the CPhI China 2013 exhibition on June 25 and 26, 2013.

The objective of the forum is to provide a communication and display platform for medical professionals, collecting the newest market information and providing various networking opportunities to discuss and showcase evolving pharmaceutical regulatory, market and technology.

The forum has strong support from a team of global speakers representing government and leading pharmaceutical companies.

The forum is divided into three modules:
Day One: Tuesday, June 25, 2013
Module A: WHO pre-qualification and international procurement and purchasing
Day Two: Wednesday, June 26, 2013
Module B: International regulatory environment and its effect on drug export
Module C: Update on good manufacturing practices (GMPs) and site inspection

How many exhibitors are likely to exhibit at CPhI China 2013, and how many of them are from India? How many countries are participating this year?
We expect more than 2,400 exhibitors with approximately 30 companies from India. The rest of exhibitors represent more than 20 different countries.

How many visitors are expected at CPhI China 2013? What growth in the number of participants are you expecting this year, compared to the previous year's event?
More than 30,000 visitors are expected, representing five per cent growth than the previous year. As the event enables the networking of all major Chinese suppliers of pharmaceutical ingredients, outsourcing, equipment and bio-solutions source ingredients and services at competitive prices and learn about the latest innovations, technologies, trends and developments.

Are there any special pavilions set this year? How are they allotted?
This year's edition of the expo will have two international pavilions – the Korea Pavilion (covering an area of 276sq m) and the India Pavilion (108sq m).

Tell us more about the co-located events with CPhI China 2013. How would Fi, Ni and Hi China – held at the same venue on the same dates – give a thrust to the success of the event?
CPhI China 2013 and Fi China 2013 bring together the biggest and most influential pharmaceutical trading platform with the most authoritative global exhibition in food ingredients and natural raw materials.

Together, they offer a comprehensive one-stop purchasing platform for pharmaceutical raw materials, pharmaceutical machinery, contract research and manufacturing, bio-medicine, packaging materials, laboratory equipment, food ingredients, natural resources, nutraceuticals, food machinery and third-party services.

As a branch of Fi Europe and Ni Europe (the biggest and most prestigious shows for food and natural ingredients in Europe), FiAC (Food Ingredients Asia China), Hi (Health Ingredients) and Ni (Natural Ingredients) has developed into an exhibition for the Chinese food ingredients industry committed to delivering high value and quality.

How would the event educate the participants in grabbing the opportunities that China holds and benefit the local and foreign participants?
CPhI provides access to the massive China market through conferences and seminars that make it easier for international visitors to meet Chinese exhibitors. This year the event will host a match-making programme called Buyer Sourcing Event and a CEO Summit that brings together domestic and international chief executive officers.

How big is the pharma ingredient market in China? At what rate is it growing?
In 2012, the size of the Chinese pharmaceutical market reached 926.1 billion RMB, and is expected to expand at an annual rate of 12 per cent between 2013 and 2020.  

Today, leading Chinese contract research organisations (CROs) and pharmaceutical companies are able to offer high-quality, cost-effective services on a global scale with growth rates forecast,  to far outpace the rest of the industry.

The increasing ability of Chinese companies to meet international standards in drug quality and safety, coupled with strong growth in the local market, makes this a must-attend event for any pharmaceutical company in 2013 – be it Chinese, regional or international.
