Karnataka gets second National Ayush Sports Centre in the country after Thrissur in Kerala under NAM

Karnataka is the second state in the country to set up the National Ayush Sports Centre at Mangaluru after Thrissur in Kerala under National Ayush Mission. The facility at Mangaluru is expected to support the sporting community to treat their neuro muscular injuries covering sprains, damaged ankle ligament and other soft tissue wounds like muscle ruptures, among others.
According to Ramachandra, IFS, Commissioner, Directorate of Ayush, these are significant developments which could further strengthen the system of medicine.
Currently, with the incessant rains, there is a delay in setting up the facility at the Mangala stadium, Mangaluru. Hence the National Ayush Sports Centre is temporarily housed within the Wenlock hospital there following the repeated requests from the Dakshina Kannada district offices of Ayush and Youth Empowerment & Sports departments that led the Ministry of Ayush to permit the same.
For the Wenlock facility, the required doctors and the equipment are provided by the National Ayush Mission under the central and state grants. The land for the dedicated facility at the Mangala stadium in Mangaluru is identified and sanctioned by NAM. The Dakshina Kannada department of health’s engineering wing is in the process of preparing a detailed project report for submission, said Dr Anant Desai, project director, National Ayush Mission, Karnataka.
Among the offerings that can be accessed by sportsmen and sportswomen are non-surgical interventions for their injuries affecting bone and muscle. There would also be fitness yoga therapies advised. Panchakarma, a treatment for the body and mind that helps cleanses and rejuvenate is an important focus too. A key component of the offering would be stress management using Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Naturopathy, and Homoeopathy methods, prior to sporting events. Besides specific diets, prevention of injury, mind and body relaxation will also be given adequate attention, said Dr Desai.
“The Thrissur facility is 100 bedded and the plan is to have the same number at the National Ayush Sports Centre at Mangaluru. We see that this area of introducing Ayush therapies to sportspersons with the Union government support will be a game-changer. So long only modern medicine techniques and Yoga were part of the sporting events and related training regime for injury treatment,” he said.
The manpower requirement for the National Ayush Sports Centre at Mangaluru is around 40. It will comprise medical professionals and paramedics from Ayush. In addition, there will be a huge requirement of massage therapists too.
Another initiative of the Karnataka health and family welfare department under the National Ayush Mission is the launch of the mobile medical units in Kodagu and Belgaum. In addition the colleges of Ayush are upgraded in terms of infrastructure and equipment in Mysuru, Bellary Bengaluru and Shivamogga. Besides 170 health and wellness centres are also opened for the general and rural population to be able to access the required medical care in Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Naturopathy, and Homoeopathy, said Dr Desai.
